How to Craft an Exciting Fiction Book: Uncovering the Untold Stories Part 1

Writer's picture: Adonis RichardsAdonis Richards

Creating a fiction book is an adventure in itself. There are stories within stories, character development, ideas that spark a fire, and some that douse it when it goes to the pen. Wild nights and powerful lessons all derive from fiction.

Want to learn some tricks to writing fiction? I’ll give you some.

Find Your Inspiration

What inspires you? Every captivating story starts with a spark of inspiration. This could come from personal experiences, history, or a simple “what if” scenario.

Do you like to travel? As a kid, did you have a place to go to where your imagination ran wild?

For example, my house, formerly my grandmother’s, has a hill leading to the highway. As children, we occasionally dropped a ball and raced

to retrieve it. In my head, each time was a wild adventure that led to a magical world. Mostly because I was small, the road down was treacherous and scary but thrilling. Now, I write short stories about that hill. Here’s one.

Think about your life, apply it to a story, and see where your imagination will lie.

Developing Compelling Characters

Characters make the story. They capture readers, drive the story, and add to the plot. Think about your characters and their development. One character may initially be a saint and become the best villain due to growth by the end. Think of redemption arcs for the character. What mistakes will characters make?

For instance, instead of a typical hero, consider a protagonist who struggles with anxiety yet is determined to save their community. Write character profiles detailing their desires, fears, and relationships. Research tells us that readers are 65% more likely to stay engaged if they can relate to characters on some level.

Here’s another story I’m developing with such a character in mind.

Building a Gripping Plot

A well-structured plot keeps readers hooked from start to finish. Begin by drafting a simple outline that includes your story's beginning, middle, and end. Introduce conflicts challenging your characters, pushing them to grow throughout the narrative.

For example, in a story about a detective, having them confront a personal trauma mid-investigation can add depth. Don’t forget to sprinkle in plot twists. Think of Batman and the Riddler. Batman is the world’s greatest detective. Yet the Riddler always has him guessing and on a wild chase. There are plot twists, and side quests all over the saga of those two. An engaging plot maintains interest and conveys deeper themes or messages.

Your Adventure Awaits

Crafting a fiction book is an exhilarating journey filled with endless possibilities. By tapping into your inspiration, creating relatable characters, and designing a gripping plot, you will be well on your way to writing an engaging story that resonates with readers. Remember to revise diligently and let your unique voice shine through each page. Now, it’s time to start your adventure — your untold story is waiting to be written!

Stay tuned for Part two!
