Black History Makers: Meet Justin Chaires

Writer: Adonis RichardsAdonis Richards

Meet Justin Chaires, Executive Committee Director of Energy & Telecommunications for the New York State Senate

He attended HVCC, Hartwick, and GCU and currently holds a Master's, Dual Bachelor of Arts, and Dual Associate of Science degrees.

Born and raised in Schenectady, Justin is part of a rich family legacy that goes back to the city's founding. “My mother was a special education teacher, and my father built turbines at GE, where he served as a shop steward and union representative.”  Justin comes from a family of love, laughter, warmth, dedication to community, and responsibility to others.

Justin is a Devoted Father with a passion for education, having a background in special education before his current position at the NYS Senate. Prior to working at the NYS Senate, he worked as a teacher for Special education for over 10 years. His family is enriched with a history of community engagement that he proudly continues while serving as the VICE President of the NAACP, chair of Public Safety Committee, and Serving the Law Enforcement New Hire Panel. All the while writing legislation as the Committee Director of Energy and Telecommunications out of the Majority Whip’s office in the New York State Senate.

To Justin, Black history is America's everyday history. He dedicates all his work in education and the Senate to realizing that Black history is an integral part of American history, and without it, there would be no American history.

Justin impacts change through the children, doing his part daily to connect with them and advocate for their needs, wishes, and desires. He also challenges himself to connect with Local businesses and push the envelope for institutional change through legislation.

You can find Justin around in the community daily. His dedication to people allows him to constantly strive for change and look to make smiles around his people. Thank you, Justin, for making Black History.
